A construction apprenticeship is a clear route into the construction industry with many roles. Typically lasting 18-24 months, you can experience all that life is like with practical experience and a qualification at the end. Here’s what a construction apprenticeship entails.
On-the-job training
This includes assignments and training delivered by a professional in the environment in which you will learn. It will be very similar to taking on a full-time job and will be legally employed by the company while you are also studying. Your employer will provide you with a full introduction and support where to go for further help and guidance.
The most hands-on experience you’ll have will be in the field, where you’ll shadow other workers, get involved in some small tasks, and work your way up to other jobs. The more you can learn on the job, the better for your own overall experience and ability to practice.
Online learning
Usually one day a week you will sit down and take part in academic studies to go towards your apprenticeship qualification. Remember this is just as important as the work you do on construction sites and other areas of the role.
You will also have the opportunity to study online. You can take classes and join online support groups to help you all work to the best of your ability. Your time will be effectively split between your employer and training provider to give you a recognizable qualification at the end.
Job site reviews
A workplace review is to see how you and your employer are getting on. There may be a few areas that need to be ironed out, for example, or you struggle in certain areas chosen by your employer. This is not to scare off apprentices, but to ensure that you get the most out of the course and experience, as does your employer. And it will also help you identify areas where you can improve in the future.
Development of job-specific skills
Something you won’t get with a university or college degree is the chance to have real life experience. It comes back to what you actually know and how it can improve your skills. It goes beyond what is learned in the classroom, which is why jobs in construction and similar fields are due to former apprentices working in the field.
