WATCH |: 2 dead, 5 injured as a result of the shooting in the graduation classes of US schools

On Tuesday, two people were killed and five were injured in a shooting near a high school graduation in the US state of Virginia.

The shooting happened around 9:00 p.m. GMT outside Richmond’s state capitol theater, where local high school students were celebrating their graduation, Richmond acting police chief Rick Edwards told reporters.

Among the dead are an 18-year-old graduate and a 36-year-old man, he added.

The condition of one of the five injured remains critical.

“People scattered, there was a lot of confusion at the scene,” said Edwards.

The 19-year-old suspect fled the scene but was arrested a short time later and is expected to be charged with second-degree murder, Edwards said.

The official did not specify a possible motive for the crime, but said the suspect knew at least one of the victims.

Several guns were recovered from the scene.

With more guns than residents, the United States has the highest rate of gun deaths of any developed nation, at 49,000 in 2021, up from 45,000 last year.
