The Last of Us Part 2
Another huge show is being delayed in every way due to the writers strike, and this time it’s HBO’s The Last of Us, which is in stark contrast to the same channel’s House of the Dragon, which is continuing with a 2nd season, though strike, insisting. its scripts are already written.
It’s not a huge shock to learn that The Last of Us Season 2 is shutting down in every way, given that Craig Mazin himself is picketing for a strike. His co-creator/writer Neil Druckman has also stopped working on the show in any capacity, including producing, not even just writing duties.
One major thing that has been cut is the casting. The original plan was to have the actors read lines for the audition taken directly from the sequel to the existing game, The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation, since there were no actual HBO show scripts to read. But now, that idea seems to have been shelved as well everything is closed due to the strike.
It’s still unclear if The Last of Us has landed Season 2’s biggest role yet, that of Abby, who will essentially co-write the series next season. Considering they looked at hundreds of actresses to find Bella Ramsey for Ellie, there must be a reason they could go through a similar amount for Abby, who likely won’t be as big a star as Pedro Pascal was for Joel. :
The Last of Us
As for what this will do with the release date, it’s probably going to be pretty bleak. This was probably a show that was 1.5, 2 years in the making between seasons given the scale of it, so it would have spanned from early Fall 2024 to Winter 2025 with its Season 1 release this past January. We don’t know how long the Writers’ Strike will last, but it could easily force another 6+ months of delays if things aren’t resolved.
To be clear, this is not a call for the strike to end faster so we can get The Last of Us season 2 faster. The writers working on this streaming series absolutely deserve what they’re asking for, from leftovers to AI protection, but it’s sure to do a lot of things for the production schedule, and while it might really feel a little tight for things. Like Late Night TV now, it will greatly influence a huge range of television in the medium to long term, including The Last of Us.
