It’s been over 15 years since Superbad graced our screens and became the defining teen comedy of the 00s. With Hollywood’s current obsession with reboots, reimaginings, and reimaginings, it seems inevitable that a beloved classic may soon be revisited. However, one of the raunchy comedy’s original stars, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, has made it clear he’s not interested in reliving his glory days unless there’s a major twist.
Speaking with Glenn Kalina on 98.1 WOGL, Mintz-Plasse stated that the only way there could be a new Superbad is if the main cast was female. He shared. “I’ve heard from some of the people who made the first one, and I don’t think they want to touch it. I think they kind of like where it sits. And sometimes if you create a sequel to things, it can kind of undermine the first one. I think they just want to let it be… If there was a way to do it, [a female version] it would be the way, for sure.”

Mintz-Plasse played fake ID creator McLovin in the coming-of-age comedy, in which he co-starred with Jonah Hill and Michael Cera. Even Seth Rogen, who co-wrote the script with Evan Goldberg while attending Vancouver’s Point Gray High School, agrees with Mintz-Plasse’s stance. In 2022, Rogen told LADBible that he would “100 percent probably never touch” the film that gave him his reputation as one of the funniest movie stars of his generation.
The idea of a female-led Superbad is gaining momentum in Hollywood, especially following the success of similar reimaginings or spin-offs of classic films with female characters. With the critical and commercial success of “Ocean’s 8” or “The ghostbusters” reboot, the idea of gender-swapping ensemble comedies took off in Tinseltown. The latest addition to the trend “He is everything.
While it remains to be seen if a gender-swapped version of Superbad will ever be brought to life, the original film has undoubtedly achieved cult status. In 2007, an episode of the three-hour Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg podcast was inducted into Slate Magazine’s Podcast Hall of Fame for its Superbad skit discussions about adolescence and the creative process. The film has also inspired various spin-off comedies since its release that attempt to replicate its raunchy humor, delusions, and heart.

As Hollywood continues to run out of original material, the odds are high for another classic to get a modern retelling. Although, with the talent involved in the original production having no interest or intention to revisit it, it seems doubtful that Superbad will get a sequel or reboot anytime soon. For now, the iconic high school party scene, McLovin’s catchphrase and other memorable moments from the classic comedy should remain in their rightful place in the halls of cinematic history.
