Putin visited Russian troops in Kherson and Luhansk regions of Ukraine
An ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the world may be on the brink of a new world war as the dangers of nuclear war grow.
“The world is sick and most likely on the brink of a new world war,” former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at a conference in Moscow.
He said such a new world war was not inevitable, but the risks of nuclear confrontation were growing, and more serious than concerns about climate change.
It comes as Ukrainian forces based on the western side of the Dnieper river launch frequent attacks on the eastern bank near the city of Kherson to try to dislodge Russian troops, a regional official said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Moscow of using military tactics similar to those used in Syria to topple Bakhmut, as heavy fighting continues for control of the salt-mining city.
“We are on the verge of a new world war,” says Russian Medvedev
An ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Tuesday that the world may be on the brink of a new world war, warning that the risks of a nuclear confrontation were also rising, although neither scenario was inevitable.
“The world is sick and most likely on the brink of a new world war,” former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who serves as vice chairman of Putin’s powerful Security Council, told a conference in Moscow.
He said such a new world war was not inevitable, but said the risks of nuclear confrontation were growing, and more serious than concerns about climate change.

Heavy, short-range fighting grips Bakhmut, battles seen on fringes – UK MoD
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said heavy fighting was continuing at close range in the western districts of the city of Bakhmut in the disputed Donetsk region.
“The key development in the last week has been on the outskirts of the city, especially near the village of Khromovye, as Ukraine seeks to control supply route 0506,” the ministry’s latest intelligence update said.
It added that Ukraine’s other options for supplying Bakhmut are likely to be complicated by muddy conditions on the non-surface.
“As the city has now been under attack for more than 11 months, the Ukrainian defenses of Bakhmut have now been integrated as one element of a much deeper defense zone that includes the city of Chasiv Yar to the west,” it said.

Russia’s Lavrov warns that the EU is now being militarized like NATO
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that the European Union is “militarizing at record speed” and is aggressive in its goal of containing Russia.
Lavrov said he has no doubt that there is now “very little difference” between the EU and NATO.
Vladimir Putin has long resented NATO expansion, particularly toward his own country, and used it in part as justification for invading Ukraine.
Russia’s Lavrov was asked whether the Ukraine war was a miscalculation, with Moscow staunchly opposed to NATO expansion, and the invasion spurred Finland’s membership, followed by Sweden, with Ukraine hoping for a roadmap to join.
“NATO never intended to stop,” the Russian minister replied, pointing to the EU-NATO declaration and actions in recent years that have seen non-NATO members Sweden and Finland “participate more frequently in NATO exercises and other operations aimed at synchronizing the military programs of NATO member states and neutral states.”
Lavrov said Russia had been promised several times that NATO would not expand, but said “that is a lie.”
“Our political scientists, as well as the impartial assessments of those abroad, are that NATO sought to divide Russia,” he said, “but in the end it only strengthened it, brought it closer.” So let’s not make hasty conclusions about how this will end.”

FBI, US companies collecting evidence of war crimes in Ukraine
Ukraine is working with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. companies to gather evidence of Russian war crimes, such as geolocation and cellphone data, senior officials said.
Ukrainian authorities have been collecting digital information from battlefields and war-torn Ukrainian cities since Russia invaded the country last February, said FBI Special Agent Alex Kobzanets, who previously served as the agency’s legal attache in Ukraine.
“Collecting that data, analyzing that data, working through that data is something that the FBI has experience working on,” Kobzanetz said at the RSA Cyber Security Conference in San Francisco.
That work includes examining cell phone information, forensic analysis of DNA samples, and analysis of body parts collected from battlefields, he said.
“The next step is to work with US national service providers and transfer that information … getting subscriber information, location information where possible,” Mr. Kobzanets added.
The work reflects deepening cooperation between the US and Ukraine on the cyberfront, where Russia has been a common adversary for both nations.
The Russian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tucker Carlson gets a job offer from Russia after leaving Fox News
It didn’t take long for Tucker Carlson to get a “job offer” after losing his primetime spot on the nation’s most-watched cable news network.
Hours after Fox News announced Monday morning that it had agreed to “part ways” with the right-wing nationalist host, Russian state media and propaganda outlets tried to tease the American media by offering him a job.
RT, the Russian state broadcaster formerly known as Russia Today, which is banned in dozens of countries, appeared to be offering him a platform.
“Hey @TuckerCarlson, you can always ask @RT_com more questions,” the paper tweeted. Analysts, however, say the apparent offer has not been taken seriously.
