It’s been over two years now PlayStation 5 released, and it’s much easier to find the once-elusive console in stock these days. (Available now Best Buy:, Amazon: and: Sony Direct.) And to get the most out of your next-gen console, you’ll probably want to invest in a PlayStation Plus membership. The subscription service was completely overhauled last year and it now has three different levels that will give you access to online games, exclusive discounts and a huge library of free games.
There haven’t been many ways to save on a subscription since the redesign, but we’ve outlined how the different tiers work below, and you’ll also find the only way to sign up for less right now. What has changed?
Before the overhaul, PlayStation offered two different subscription services. PlayStation Plus was a $10-a-month service that looked similar Xbox Live Gold which allows you to play online games and participate in multiplayer games. PlayStation Now was a $10-a-month cloud gaming service that gave gamers access to a massive library of classic PS2, PS3, and PS4 titles. The new PS Plus has essentially rolled both memberships into one service with multiple subscription tiers. There are three different membership packages available that combine different features and benefits of previous subscriptions.
PS Plus Essential:
$10 a month, $25 for three months or $60 for a year, PlayStation Plus Essential: basically no different from the previous PS Plus subscription. It offers all the same features, including access to online play, two months of free games, cloud storage and exclusive discounts on the PlayStation Store. If you had a PS Plus membership before the update went live, it was automatically converted to Essential.
PS Plus Extra:
$15 per month, $40 for three months or $100 for a year, mid-level PlayStation Plus Extra: subscription is somewhat similar Game Pass Ultimate membership is offered to Xbox users. It includes all the benefits and features of an Essential membership, but also gives you access to a catalog of up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games. The selection includes many hit titles such as God of War, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima.
PS Plus Premium
a PlayStation Plus Premium Membership is the highest level available and is $18 per month, $50 for three months, or $120 for a full year. In addition to all the benefits of a basic and premium subscription, it gives you access to a huge library of over 700 games. This includes the latest PS4 and PS5 hits from the Extra subscription, as well as a catalog of over 300 classics from the PS1, PS2 and PS3 eras (similar to the previous PS Now subscription). It lets you stream many of these classic titles, so you don’t have to worry about them eating up your valuable storage space. You also get time-limited play trials, so you can try out new games before you buy. If you had a PS Now subscription before the review went live, it was automatically converted to PlayStation Plus Premium.
PS Plus deals
Things were pretty messy leading up to the revamp, with people snapping up discounted memberships and racking up hundreds in savings before Sony wised up to the loophole. It’s been closed for a while now, and we haven’t seen many opportunities to save on any service since then. Sony and retailers have apparently pulled the remaining membership codes to the now-defunct PS Now service, but if you’re only interested in the Essential level membership, there are still a few deals on the original PS Plus.
There’s a pretty small selection of updated PS Plus deals at the moment, so if you’re looking to save some cash, this is your best bet. This offer is technically for an original PS Plus subscription prior to renewal, which will automatically convert to an Essential membership. We haven’t had a chance to test this deal ourselves, but several reviewers have mentioned that they had no problem using one of these older codes. An Essential membership is normally $60 for the year, which is already a 50% discount on the monthly plan price. But right now at CD Keys, you can get an annual subscription for $50, which brings the monthly cost down to just over $4. You won’t have access to a huge library of games, but you’ll be able to play online and you’ll get two free games every month.
