What you need for air fried salmon
This recipe is so simple that you only need 3 things: salmon fillets, salmon seasoning and olive oil.
Our Air Pan Salmon recipe calls for about 1.5 lbs. salmon You can buy them pre-sliced (like we do) or you can buy large fillets from your grocery store and cut them up yourself.
We find that when cooking portions of salmon, it cooks more quickly and evenly than cooking whole salmon fillets.
Try the Surrender Salmon.
Our all-time favorite salmon is Surrender Salmon. They catch wild Alaskan salmon out of Bristol Bay, Alaska. The salmon is bright orange, so flaky and delicious, and really the best.
Surrender Salmon is a family run business based here in Minneapolis and they are good friends of ours. Support local businesses whenever possible.
For this recipe in particular, we use homemade salmon seasoning (AKA dry rub). We love how crispy the outside is with the salmon seasoning, but you can always use salmon marinade as well.
What you need for our salmon seasoning:
- Garlic powder
- Brown sugar
- Mustard powder
- black pepper
This versatile salmon seasoning is so delicious on any kind of salmon. Make a batch and store it in your pantry for later.

We use olive oil to make sure the salmon doesn’t stick to the air basket, but you can also try non-stick cooking spray.

Remove the moisture in the salmon. before seasoning your salmon pieces, use a paper towel to remove as much moisture as possible. This will help the salmon to crisp up on top.
Season generouslySince you are using homemade salmon seasoning, you can measure how much salt is used. Don’t worry about over-seasoning because of this.
Cook skin downThe salmon does not need to be turned in the fan. Therefore, make sure to cook it on the skin.
Rub with olive oil. One of our secrets to perfect pan-seared salmon is to drizzle it with olive oil before cooking. It will make the outside crispy and blackened, so don’t skip it.
Overcook. whatever you do, don’t overcook your salmon. Cook the salmon in the air fryer for 7-8 minutes or until the flesh is pale pink on the inside.
Can you use frozen salmon in the air fryer?
Just like our air fryer chicken wings tutorial, you can make salmon in the air fryer while it’s frozen. Basically how it works is that you first thaw the salmon in the air fryer and then cook it according to the instructions.
- So before we start our recipe, place the frozen salmon pieces skin side down on the air basket.
- Bake at 400ºF for 7-9 minutes or until melted.
- Then follow our recipe as indicated.
How long should you cook salmon in the air fryer?
So if you’re wondering how long to cook salmon in the air fryer, the answer is:
- Fresh. 7-8 minutes
- From frozen. 14-16 minutes
Cook the salmon in a fan oven at 400ºF for about 7-8 minutes.
You don’t have to turn the salmon in the fan as it circulates the air to cook your food perfectly on both sides.
Cook your salmon in a skillet at 400ºF for about 7-8 minutes.
You know when salmon is done because it is pale pink in color, firm to the touch, and flaky. You can also use a meat thermometer. Internal temperature should be at least 125ºF.
The answer is yes, but do we recommend it? No. Air fryers cook food so well because of circulation. If you line your roaster with tin foil, you’re blocking the air flow and things won’t cook properly.
You can essentially thaw your salmon in an air fryer and then cook it. So yes!
Store leftover fanny salmon in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
To warm up. we recommend heating in the microwave on high for 60 seconds or on the stove on medium for 2-3 minutes.
