Netflix has started paying for password sharing in more than 100 countries around the world.
Subscribers will now receive a notification prompting them to check the number of individuals currently using their Netflix account.
They will then be prompted to purchase a new subscription for users outside their household, or add them to their existing account.
The cost of adding an extra person to an account ranges from €4 per month in several European countries to £4.99 in the UK and $7.99 in the US.
The streaming company has been testing the fee in multiple countries since last year, and as of April, Netflix confirmed that it would be rolling out the system on a large scale.
The corporation believes that around 100 million households worldwide share a Netflix account at no cost.
This limits the company’s ability to generate revenue and generate payments for new content. Therefore, it wants to prompt these users to pay for a subscription and unlock access to their unique content.
