Description

This Mushroom and Swiss Burger Casserole combines the delicious flavors of a classic burger with the heartiness of a casserole, making it perfect for cozy family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 8 ounces fresh mushrooms (cremini or button, or shiitake or portobello)
  • 2 cups Swiss cheese
  • 4 day-old hamburger buns (or French bread or whole wheat buns)
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth (or vegetable broth)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Thyme (or rosemary, or any herbs you love)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of oil. Once hot, add diced onions and minced garlic, sautéing until they are fragrant and translucent.
  3. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are tender and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Push the mushroom mixture to one side of the skillet, add the ground beef to the other side, and cook until browned. Break it apart with a spatula, mixing it with the mushrooms as it cooks. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  5. Sprinkle in your salt, pepper, and any herbs you’ve chosen. Stir everything together and remove from heat.
  6. In a large bowl, tear the hamburger buns into bite-sized pieces.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix the beef and mushroom mixture with the torn bread. Pour in the beef broth and mix until everything is well combined. The bread should be moistened but not overly soggy.
  8. Incorporate half of the Swiss cheese into the mixture, stirring until evenly distributed.
  9. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Top with the remaining Swiss cheese.
  10. Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  11. Once done, let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
