Kyrie Irving has no doubts that the Nets would have won the championship in 2021 if he had not been injured in the game against the Bucks.
Irving was responding to posts on Twitter when he stumbled upon one about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s recent back injury. User “BKN 85” believed the two-time MVP’s illness was karma for the injury Irving suffered in 2021. However, the former network did not add to that harmful discourse.
Instead, he took the opportunity to reminisce about what could have been. Irving heaped praise on that Brooklyn team, confidently declaring that they would have won the championship that year. He also regretted that it was one of the most painful moments of his career.
“One of the most disappointing and painful moments of my career,” Irving wrote on Twitter. “If I didn’t get hurt that streak, every single one of us on the Brooklyn team/car would be a champion. There’s no doubt about it.”
Irving injured his ankle midway through the second quarter of Game 4 of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Bucks. The NBA champion had just made a basket in the paint. Unfortunately, he landed on Antetokounmpo’s leg on the way down. Irving called it “the worst ankle injury” he’s ever had.
Before Irving went down, the Nets had beaten the Bucks 2-1. He also averaged 20 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in that series. Adding insult to injury, Harden, sidelined by a hamstring injury, was a shell of himself. That allowed Kevin Durant to take on the offensive load as a shot maker and creator. In the end, Brooklyn lost to Milwaukee in seven games.
Antetokounmpo is currently dealing with a lower back injury

Antetokounmpo suffered a lower back injury after taking a hard fall during Game 1 of this year’s playoffs against the Heat. Therefore, the 28-year-old player missed the next two games. Despite still being sick, Antetokounmpo played in Game 4. Milwaukee lost, however, Jimmy Butler dropping 56 points on a ridiculous 68% shooting.
The Bucks now trail the Heat 3-1 in the series. Antetokounmpo is expected to play in Game 5 on Wednesday.
