Updated 05/21/2023 at 7:38 PM ET. Instagram and Facebook are now back online. The company has yet to issue an official statement about the shutdown. However, before the service resumed, Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold admitted that the outage was due to email. The Verge, by saying. “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing Instagram. We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Back in 2021, when Instagram suffered a major outage, it said it was testing a new feature that would alert users of outages or technical difficulties directly within the app. The disable indicator is supposed to be visible in the then Activity tab, which is now the Notifications tab. No such indication has yet appeared.

Instagram, owned by Meta, is currently disabled for users worldwide.
Outage detector website DownDetector suggests that Instagram went down on Sunday, May 21 at 6 p.m.
The platform is unavailable on the web, and the mobile app currently shows a “Failed to update feed” prompt saying “We’re sorry, something went wrong.” Please try again” prompt. Users are also reporting issues with logging in, loading stories, and sending messages in the app.

Meta-owned Facebook also appears to have suffered the same outage, with DownDetector suggesting that the platform began experiencing problems around 5:58 PM ET. The reason for the outage is currently unknown. Meta has yet to issue a statement about the shutdown.
