Indians clean up pure gold after a perfect 10 overs

ItanagarAs expected, it was a perfect 10 for the Indian rowers in the individual events. In complete control of the South Asian Junior Table Tennis, the hosts won all the gold medals on offer at the Dorji Khandu Indoor Stadium today.

Apart from this, Indians also won four silver medals in singles. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Maldives were also among the medalists, while Bhutan, competing only in singles, missed out on a draw.

On the second day of the championships, the Indians won three gold medals in boys’ under-15, girls’ under-19 and girls’ under-15, while Nepal won the boys’ under-19 gold medal.

Ankur Bhattacharjee defeated Payas Jain 4-2 to win the gold in the Under-19 boys’ singles. Payas had to contend with silver.

The match had all the excitement of a final, befitting the occasion. Both guys played aggressively and went on long rallies. But Ankur proved to be the better player on the day as Payas had to catch up with his opponent after Ankur took a 3-1 lead. The Delhi paddler managed to take the fifth game, but in the sixth game, Ankur closed it out with minimal points to wrap up the final, especially after Payas’ backhand files fell short at crucial moments.

In the Under-19 girls’ singles gold, Suhana Saini defeated Yashaswini Ghorpade 4-1 in what turned out to be a one-sided final. Yashaswini was off color and could never pick Suhana’s deceptive serve as the former was playing at the net more often, offering negative points to Suhana.

In the Under-19 Girls’ Doubles, Yashaswini and Suhana combined to beat the Maldivian pair of Mishka Ibrahim and Fatimat Dehema Ali 3-0 to clinch the gold. Similarly, the Indian duo of Divyansh Srivastava and Jash Modi defeated Ridhoy Mohutasin Ahmed and Baun Rahim Lian to win the boys’ doubles 3-0.

In the Under-15 Boys’ Singles, Priyanuj Bhattacharya defeated PB Abhinand 3-1, while in the Under-15 Girls’ Singles, Jennifer Varghese hit a runway to beat Avisha Karmakar 3-1 in their final. As for the girls, Jennifer Varghese and Avisha Karmakar beat Nepal’s Sushmita Khadka and Subhashri Shrestha to claim the top podium position in the section.

In mixed doubles, Payas Jain and Yashaswini won gold beating Maldivian opponents Akhyar Ahmed Khalid and Fatimat Deema Ali, while PB Abhinand and Jennifer Varghese edged out Sri Lanka’s Mohamed Akram Shafiullah and Kavindya Tamadi for gold.
