Deliciously Sweet Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake Recipe

- 3 large Fuji or Honeycrisp apples
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (divided)
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (or allspice as substitute)
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (preferably pure)
- 1/2 cup milk (can substitute with almond milk)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- Melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth and bubbly.
- Arrange apple slices in an overlapping pattern over the caramel mixture in the pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the remaining 1/4 cup of butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually combine the dry and wet ingredients, alternating with the milk.
- Spread the cake batter evenly over the apple layer in the pan.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving platter.
- Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
