Description

A classic Southern banana pudding recipe featuring layers of creamy vanilla pudding, ripe bananas, and vanilla wafers. This easy, homemade dessert is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 68 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 (11 ounce) box vanilla wafers
  • Whipped cream or meringue for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, water, cornstarch, salt, and beaten eggs.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract until butter is melted.
  4. Pour half of the pudding into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced bananas over the pudding.
  6. Layer half of the vanilla wafers over the bananas.
  7. Repeat layers with remaining pudding, bananas, and wafers.
  8. Cover and chill for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  9. Top with whipped cream or meringue before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk instead of water.
  • Ensure bananas are ripe but not overly mushy for the best texture.
  • Chill time is crucial for the wafers to soften and absorb the pudding.
