Description

Apple Cider Smothered Chicken combines savory and sweet flavors in a comforting dish perfect for autumn evenings.


Ingredients

  • 4 pieces thin-cut chicken breasts
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 4 slices prosciutto
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped sage
  • 2 medium Honeycrisp apples
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Season chicken with salt and pepper, dredge in flour mixture of paprika and cayenne.
  3. Cook prosciutto in skillet over medium-high heat until crispy, about 5 minutes.
  4. In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and sear chicken for 3-5 minutes per side until golden.
  5. Caramelize onions in skillet for about 5 minutes, then add butter, garlic, thyme, sage, and salt & pepper.
  6. Pour in apple cider and simmer for 5 minutes, then add cream, chicken, and apple wedges.
  7. Transfer skillet to the oven and bake for 5-10 minutes until cheese melts and is bubbly.
  8. Serve with crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
