After the first two rounds at the Valspar Championship on Friday, Adam Schenck shot a two-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead.

Schenck had four birdies, all but one inside 10 feet, and finished with a bogey from a bunker on the short 18th on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.

After a 20-footer on the par-3 eighth, a 10-footer on the par-3 eighth, a 10-footer on the 10th and a long up-and-down putt on the par-5 11th for, it did not bother. to him.

“I feel like a lot of times you … maybe shoot under 2 and you say, ‘That could have been a 6 or a 7.’ But it really couldn’t have been a ton better with the number of putts I made,” he said.

He was 7-under 135, one shot ahead of Kramer Hickok, who had a 68.

Schenck is playing in his 10th straight week on the PGA Tour.

His work is getting more attention this year as his wife is expecting their first child, a boy, in just a month.

“I’m trying to make as many points as possible to spend as much time as possible with him and my wife, which will be very special,” Schenck said.

He started his year at the Sony Open in Honolulu and didn’t take a week off after that, traveling to California and Arizona and every stop on the Florida swing. He made the cut in all but two and is 72nd in the FedEx Cup.

A missed cut at The Players Championship last week might have helped.

“I was at home for 3 1/2 days and I didn’t touch a bat,” Schenck said. “I would practice, but the weather in Indiana was so bad, I really couldn’t. So on Tuesday afternoon I flew to Valspar and had a little practice, then played nine holes and then went to the premium and left. went.”

Jordan Spieth will be there most of the weekend, wasting a great round of driving with questionable short irons. He still posted a 70 and was just two shots behind.

Tommy Fleetwood had a 69 to join Spieth two strokes back in the group along with Cody Gribble (65) and Davis Riley (68), who lost to Sam Burns in a playoff at Innisbrook last year.

Burns, the two-time defending champion, is trying to become the first player to win the same event three years in a row since Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic (2009-11). He had a 73 and was seven shots behind.

Justin Thomas had a 70 and was 3-under 139.
