A light approach to a serious urological health problem

Everything you wanted to know about human plumbing but were afraid to ask.

Book and author Madeline Zech Ruiz

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning the basics of how things work “underneath” and that there are medical answers to most urological problems. As author Madeline Zech Ruiz says, “If you have a vagina or a penis, you need to read this book.”

In his hilarious handbook of urology, Ruiz argues that it’s time for society to get over its anxiety about our plumbing system. Not only does she provide critical information about the system for both men and women, but she also encourages readers to be active participants in keeping it healthy.

The author covers her journey as a female urologist living in the small town of McAllen, Texas, who is constantly fielding questions from both strangers and loved ones, somewhat at first, but eventually embracing her role as a human communicator patient and between the patient. her highly skilled doctor/husband.

Ruiz uses an accessible style interspersed with colorful expressions; For example, she uses analogies to detail the various subspecialties of urology—her husband specializes in reconstructive surgery—and describes a weak urine stream, so “his pee flow was more like a rock slowly skipping across a very large pond.”

Other topics include penile prostheses, prostate health, vasectomy, kidney stones, and hormone replacement therapy. Of special note are diabetes, the effects of anesthesia, an alarming case of parasites in a neighbor, and pelvic floor therapy for women with incontinence.

In this latter case, Ruiz explains that the muscles a woman needs to develop continence are the same ones used to hold in gas. She describes how her doctor husband “actually sounded the word ‘fark’ like it was an orchestral harp” when discussing the necessary muscle exercises.

It is impressive that the book has already been translated into 13 languages. This may allow the author to break taboos around the world for the betterment of men’s and women’s health. Very educational and fun to read.
